Does anyone else have problems with their PT1911 rusting away before their very eyes? I love the gun, as it shoots great. Feels great. Carries great. Shoots everything I feed it.
However, if I carry it during the day and I sweat at all, it starts to rust within hourss. I'm a contractor, so sweating is part, so sweating is part of the game. I carry it in a Milt Sparks holster, but moisture still gets to the entire left side of the gun (nearest my body).
The grip area, slide, etc. all start to rust. I have to take the grips off, take the gun apart, etc. to scrub away the the rust and re-oil it.
I am NOT happy with the finish on this gun. I know, I know, it's a Taurus, so you get what you pay for, but come on!

I have seen people with what I call 'pee hands'. They handle any steel and within hours the metal begins to rust where they touched it. I honestly believe it is a chemical reaction, something in the sweat and in the metal react to make the rust form quicker. I know I am the opposite and the more I handle certain items the longer they do not rust, but if I stop handling them, they rust. One is my my drill press vise I made last year on the Bridgeport vertical milling machine. I handle it and it doesn't rust, and when I don't touch it, it rusts up. I have not oiled it, so I expect it to rust.
I know my Taurus pt99af does not have this problem, but, its finish is wearing away, but it is 20 years old now, (made in 1988) and I have used it ruthlessly.
Have you tried other lubricants? I do like Nathan on my guns and use Mobile 1 synthetic on the friction points but for the out side, I wipe it often with a silicone treated cloth and it works really well. People keep telling me 'you need to degrease the gun to get rid of the oil before you use the silicone'... yea ok what ever.... I haven't and I don't, I use both the oil and the silicone and it works for me. I am happy with the results this has given me for the last 4 years since I have done this combination....
I do know Taurus claims a lifetime warentee, I have never used it, but you might want to give them a call and see what they have to say. Maybe they can tell you some trick that will work. xyz oil helps to...blah blah blah... maybe they will refinish the gun... I don't know... never hurts to call and suck up to get what you want.... |

Since it performs so well and you like it so much I would just have it refinished with a sturdy one that will hold up Like a Roguard or Np3 from Robar .

If you're like most owners you paid less than $600 for it and even after a $300 complete refinish you're no worse off than you would have been buying a $1,000+ Kimber and wondering if it will work . |

| What BigO01 said. The gun is definitely worth the upgrade, and your rust problems will be greatly reduced ( I don't believe that any application is 100% rust free, but many of them come close.) I bought mine on a whim - I had a pistol purchase permit that was within a couple days of expiry. I got it as a understudy for my black stainless Springfield. I would have preferred a stainless, but none was available. The bluing on the Taurus is, unfortunately, a bit thin, but the darn thing is so reliable and accurate that I decided that it was worth the upgrade to night sights & VZ grips. Every time I take it to the range I end up loaning it to somebody who then swears that they're gonna go right out and get one of their own. It shoots just as well as any 1911 I've ever had, and much better that many. Anybody remember the AMT Hardballer or the ODI Viking??? (Picture a stainless Combat Commander with a Seecamp double action trigger conversion) What junk. I still have the ODI pistol rug though. It was the only part of the package that worked as advertised. I've never had an occasion to contact Taurus customer service, but it wouldn't hurt to give them a call. The trouble is, as with all blued guns, if you carry them IWB, they're going to show surface wear fairly soon. Might as well have it Nitexed - or whatever your favorite finish is - and then you'll have something that's a little special to show your practicality and pride of ownership. Good Luck. |
